A bit of cheer on a gloomy day

One of the first native flowers to appear in this area when the snow melts is this Ranunculus.  Now that the ground is starting to thaw, these bright yellow buttercups are popping out of the ground in lovely profusion.

I found a field full of these cheerful little flowers near the Bitterroot River today; an uplifting touch on an overcast afternoon.

If you haven’t pruned your trees yet now is the time, before the nights start to warm up and the sap gets running.  It’s also a good time to think about mulching.  Mulch helps regulate soil temperature and keeps it from warming up too quickly as the days get longer and sunnier.
